Chudleigh bowl out Abbots on way to bounce-back win

CHUDLEIGH were quickly back to winning ways after their defeat by Shobrooke Park when then upset Abbotskerswell by 44 runs.

Matt Heather top scored for Chudleigh with 57 as they reached 152 all out with seven balls to go.

Abbots were dismissed for 108 in reply after a dismal showing from their middle order.

Having been 50 for none in reply, Abbots slumped to 71 for six.

A brief recovery led by Tom Andrews and Gareth Penrice got Abbots up to 101, then they last their last four wickets for just seven runs.

Victory wasn’t enough to put Chudleigh back on top of the table. They sit third on 97 points, just one behind second-placed South Devon, who are nine behind leaders Ipplepen.

Ed Foreman, the Chudleigh captain, said it was a good game to win after being put in on a difficult batting strip.

“I thought 150 would be a winning score before the game, but felt half way through our innings we could have got another bonus point,” said Foreman.

“We bowled perfect areas and took our catches. It was good to get back on track with a well-fought win.”

Heather was the only batter to get past 20 for Chudleigh with opener Mark Solway next best on 19.

Rob Clarke, Will Heather and Faisel Khaliq all batted time though to give Heather a running mate in middle-order stands of 25, 28 and 22 that were priceless in the context of a low scoring game.

Abbots bowled tidily almost without exception. Connor Stanley (3-27) removed the last three after Heather had fallen to Hugo Whitlock (2-10).

Dylan Nel’s 34 in 73 minutes was as good as it got for Abbots when they batted.

Clarke (3-34) had early wickets, Will Heather (3-220 wickets in the middle and Khaliq (3-25) wickets at the end.
