South Devon up to second in table

SOUTH Devon are up to second in the table after routing depleted Plymstock by 98 runs.

Ipplepen remain top despite losing to Ivybridge, and Chudleigh dropped bonus points beating Abbotskerwell, which lowered them to third.

Nick Lowe’s early breakthrough when he had Ali Wright caught behind for a duck proved a false dawn as South Devon cracked on to make 240 for six.

Neil Hancock top scored with 69 -  he shared stands of 69 with Dave Knowles and 93 with Sean Day (48) – and there was a 20-ball cameo at the end from Jon Martin (36no),

Acting captain Jack Horton – standing in for Scott Mansfield – had two for 40 and was the only bowler to take more than one wicket.

Plymstock, who were also without reliable all-rounder Dave Orchard, were bowled out for 142 with four balls to go.

The writing had been on the wall at 20 for three with Dom Wood, Matt McKay and Josh Hocken all back in the hut.

Horton’s 54 off 85 balls kept the middle-order from collapsing, but when he was fifth out at 99 the slow slide to 142 all out began.

Seb Jordan made 17 and George Barnicott 23 before time ran out.

There were three wickets each for Jimmy Allen (3-39) and former Devon captain Hancock (3-19), backed up by a tidy spell from Martin (2-19).

“As games go it couldn't have gone any better,” said Martin.

“We won the toss batted and scored 240 on a 180 pitch then bowled and fielded perfectly to bowl them out for 150.

“And a bonus that the top two lost to bunch up the league getting close to half way.”
