EXMOUTH batsman Michael Collinge (above) pulled off cricket’s rarest batting feat against North Devon when he hit six sixes in the same over.Collinge, who usually plays for Exmouth 2nd XI, was unable to travel to Plymouth so stayed behind to help the 3rd XI in their game instead.
Exmouth were going along quite nicely at 130 for none when Collinge went out to bat with 19 overs to go.
Everything was routine until two overs from the end when Collinge set about North Devon bowler Simon Demoney.
Julian Page, Exmouth’s former 1st XI captain, was umpiring when Collinge got going.
“There were a couple of full tosses – the rest were in the slot,” said Page.
“Oddly, after the first couple of sixes, I thought it might be on.
“Every one cleared the boundary easily. We lost one of the balls but got the rest back.
“I don’t know who bowled the next over, but Michael hit his first two balls for six as well!
“I have never seen anything like it - and I used to play with John Tierney, who hit the ball further and harder than most.”
Collinge finished with 125, which came off just 57 balls. Demoney actually went for 37 in the over he bowled to Collinge as there was a wide in there as well.
Exmouth, who made 323 for two, went on to win the game by 89 runs.
Six sixes in any form of cricket is rare. In the Devon League is has only been recorded once before.
Mark Ashworth was the captain of Paignton 2nd XI in 1997 when he smashed Seaton’s Peter Lawson for six sixes in an over.
