Booker Wholesale Devon Cup swings into action on Sunday

THE Devon Cup swings into action on Sunday with a new sponsor in place for the next three years.

Booker Wholesale – the wholesale cash-and-carry business – will be the competition’s title sponsor.

And a bonus for this season’s finalists is they will receive vouchers to spend in Booker Wholesale’s branches in Paignton, Newton Abbot, Barnstaple, Exeter and Plymouth.

Holders Sidmouth begin their defence of the title with a tricky trip up the coast to Exmouth.

County duties will deny Sidmouth the services of spin bowler Charlie Miles, but otherwise they are at full strength.

Opening batsman Liam Lewis is in fine form at the moment having hit two centuries last weekend.

Lewis slammed a ton against Plymouth on Saturday, followed up by a T20 century against Heathcoat on the Fortfield on Sunday in the Servicemaster Clean-sponsored competition.

Exmouth won’t be at full strength – Devon paceman Trevor Anning is absent – but skipper Richard Baggs does not see that as a problem.

“It will be a chance for some of he other lads to stake a claim,” said Baggs.

Exeter, last season’s beaten finalists, are at home to Cornwood in the first round.

Skipper Miles Lenygon should be home from holiday in Morocco in time to lead the side having handed the tiller to Jon Tipper while he has been away.

Bovey Tracey find themselves playing Torquay two days running as the teams are meeting in the league on Saturday (away) and the cup in Sunday (home).

Draw: Heathcoat v Plymouth, Plymstock v Budleigh, Exmouth v Sidmouth, Bradninch v Paignton, Exeter v Cornwood, Chudleigh v Brixham, Plympton v Barton, Bovey Tracey v Torquay.
