SOUTH Devon captain Jon Martin has already written off Saturday’s 163-run defeat at Braunton as ‘a bad day at the office’.
Braunton made 240 for eight in their 45 overs – Rob Collier making a top score of 68.
Collier and Ian Roberts (41) put on 87 together before Callum Mitchell added some late impetus with a quick 51 not out.
Martin had four for 37 and spinner Jimmy Allen 3-54.
South Devon were all out for 77 in reply – Neil Hancock top scoring with a modest 28.
The Newtonians reached 53 for two without too many problems, then fell apart.
Destroyer in chief was Braunton’s Matt Smith, whose eight for 38 was the best bowling return in the B Division so far this season. He took three wickets in one over as the collapse gathered pace.
Joe Barnes took a wicket and a disgruntled Martin was run out for the other.
Martin had played forward to a delivery that hit him on the pad. The decision was ‘not out’ but Braunton had another bite of the cherry by throwing down the stumps from the cordon and that shout was upheld.
