Thors get international clearance from league to play lady in 3rd XI

THORVERTON made an unusual signing just before the transfer deadline – lady cricketer Meika Griggs.

Meika is the sister of Thorverton’s overseas player Kobi Griggs who is accompanying him on his trip to the UK this summer.

Thorverton, like many other sides operating third teams, are always on the lookout for players.

Meika caught the eye of skipper James May while playing in a pub tournament on the ground a couple of weeks ago.

“She doesn’t play cricket at home, but I know she has bowled to Koby in the nets and clearly knows a thing or two about the game,” said Thorverton secretary Mike Denford.

“We had a friendly tournamemt at Thorverton recently that Meika played in and did pretty well.

“She can bat and bowled straight enough to get one of our 1st XI players out.

“That was good enough for us, so we got the signing-on pad out.

“There was only one snag; being Australian she is classed as an overseas player and had to have clearance to play. That all went through.

“I know lady cricketers are not that rare in the Devon League as there are quite a few playing seconds and thirds these days.

“But I don’t think there has ever been one before who required international clearance.”

Meika made her Thorverton debut on Saturday in the win over Exwick. She didn’t get a wicket this time, but did take a catch in the covers.
