Problems piling up for Plympton after 10-wicket defeat

PLYMPTON’S season hit a new low when they crashed to a 10-wicket defeat against visiting Torquay.

Plympton were all out 51 in just 27 of their 50 overs - the smallest total registered by any side in the Premier Division this season.

Torquay needed just 45 minutes to knock off the runs and eat tea before heading back up the A38. They sit second in the table.

Plympton remain where they have been almost all season, which is rock bottom without a win to their name in the first half.

Plympton are 44 points from safety and if they don’t start winning soon there is only going to be one outcome.

“Unfortunately, everyone is low on confidence and you could see that in the way lads were getting out,” said skipper James Carr.

“Credit to Torquay, they bowled tight upfront and the spinners bowled well, but six of the eight wickets they took were long-hops or half-vollies hit straight at fielders.

“If you are winning games and confident, they are hitting the gaps. We are just not playing well enough.”

Devon paceman Ryan Stevenson cleaned up Tom Johnson and Duncan Hefford in a lively opening spell as Plympton dipped to 15 for two.

Josh Mailing was third out, bowled by former Cornwood spihnner Matt Petherbridge for 14, which turned out to be the top score in the innings.

Once Dave Wrench departed to Sach Galhenage at 33 for four, it turned into a procession.

Owen Gannon and James Carr went in successive balls to Galhenage.

Ollie Mulberry was eighth out for 13 with the score on 50, the third of Petherbridge’s victims.

Galhenage finished with four for nine and Petherbridge four for 17. On a dark day for Plympton their last five wickets went down for just seven runs.

Torquay didn’t hang about knocking off the runs – it was job done before the end of the 15th over.

Most of the runs were scored by Mitch Pugh, who was 35 not out. Jack Richardson (9no) was at the other end.

It doesn’t get any easier for Plympton as they are away to champions Sidmouth this Saturday

“We travel to Sidmouth looking to try and cause a massive upset and get our season off and running,” said Carr.

Justin Yau, the Torquay captain, said he was surpised with the ease his side won.

Plympton are just lacking confidence at the moment and it showed when we skittled them it cheaply,” said Yau.

“We bowled well but didn't expect to win as comfortably as we did.

“We get to half way in a good position and we need to kick on and keep playing like we have done in the first half of the season.”
