Lye slams quickfire ton in Exmouth cup blitz

RECORD books are being hunted down after Exmouth slammed 419 for seven against Exeter in the semi-finals of the Devon Senior Cup.

Exmouth’s total is certainly a record for the competition, although no one is quite sure what the old one was!

Plympton chased 309 to win at Bradninch in the 40-over cup in 2011 – which may be the record – although South Devon have a prior claim dating back to 1996.

South Devon broke the 300 mark against non-league South Brent in one of the mis-matches of all time. Old scorebooks are being looked for to confirm exactly how many South Devon scored.

The only word to describe events at the Maer Ground was ‘carnage’ as Exeter’s bowlers were flogged all around the ground and out of it as well.

Openers Sandy Allen (52) and Richard Baggs (51) put on 116 for the first wicket inside 14 overs – and the worst was yet to come.

David Lye joined Baggs after Allen was bowled by Adam Gribble and promptly started flaying the bowling.

Lye clattered 121 off just 61 balls and hit 13 fours and eight sixes during a stay of 63 minutes. He went from 0-50 in 34 balls and 50-100 in another 19.

There were stands of 63 with Chris Metters (28) and 89 with Gary Chappell (35).

Getting Lye out did little to slow the run rate as Exmouth added another 119 in the nine overs remaining after his departure.

Sam Conway had 38 off 17 balls and Trevor Anning raced to 35 in 11 balls – 32 of them in boundaries.

Exeter, who were minus frontline bowler Billy Searle and Matt Hicks, didn’t manage a maiden in 40 overs.

Merryck Steward was least expensive with one for 41 from seven while Blake Reed went for 131 in eight overs at the other end of the scale.

Exeter were looking down the barrel of 11 an over to win from the start – an impossible task even if they had top batters Andy Curtis and Rob Holman playing, which they weren’t

Exmouth mixed the bowling up – spinner Chappell bowled seamers, pacer Anning bowled spin and keeper Allen had a trundle as well – not that it did Exeter any favours.

Reed made 68 off 60 balls and Ben Green dished out a bit of tap on his way to 85.

When the overs ran out Exeter were 165 runs short of victory on 255 for five.

Exmouth 419-7 (D Lye 121, S Allen 52, R Baggs 51, S Conway 38; B Green 2-65, J Taylor 2-53), Exeter 255-5 (B Green 85, B Reed 68).

SIDMOUTH’S ECB T20 adventure ended in the disappointment of an 80-run defeat against Frocester.

Devon’s representatives in the National ECB competition were drawn against the host club in the morning semi-final of the regional play-off.

Frocester’s former Gloucestershire batsman Nick Trainor top scored with 80 not out in a total of 160 for seven. They were 48 for three at halfway and accelerated away.

Sidmouth slumped to 12 for five in reply and were always on a hiding to nothing after that. They were all out for 80 with an over to go.
