South Dartmoor girls off to national finals
Just Champion - National finalists South Dartmoor College with England lady captain Caroline Edwards after their victory in the regional final

SOUTH Dartmoor's U13 girls’ cricket team have made it through to the National finals of the Chance to Compete competition.

After winning through as the Devon representatives, the girls won their regional round in Bristol and then the national semi-final in Stroud.

They were up against St Ivo School from Huntingdon in a best of three semi-final. The format is eight- a-side softball and eight overs per side. Everyone except the wicket keeper bowls and batters retire on 20.

In the first game South Dartmoor posted 62 with St Ivo finishing well short.

In the second game South Dartmoor again batted first and scored 66.

St Ivo got off to a flyer and were easily on course to win until the last three overs when South Dartmoor really applied the pressure and ended up winning by six runs to book their place in the final.

They are now one of only two teams left in the competition. The other is a school from Lancashire, who won the North against South semi-final.

The final is at Wormsley cricket ground next Wednesday (August 14). The private ground in Buckinghamshire is on an estate owned by the Getty family.

“This is going to be an exciting experience for the girls as they will play on the same wicket, following the women’s England v Australia ashes,” said Julie Ingham-Hill, who with Becky Mason coaches the team.

“Most of the girls have only been playing cricket for one or two years and their success is testament to their hard work

“We are so proud of them. Not only are they now playing in a national final but they also have the opportunity to watch the women’s Ashes test and then have all the England players watching them play after.

“It will be an unbelievable experience for them.”
