Braunton sign former Devon left-hander Bettis

BRAUNTON were reprieved from relegation well after the end of last season – and intend to make the best of it.

The Kelsey men thought their number was up after they lost to fellow strugglers South Devon on the last day of the B Division season and finished in the bottom two.

Then the Uplyme saga started to unfold and in mid-October Braunton learned they had been spared the drop.

Uplyme had won a promotion-play-off game from the C Division using an ineligible player and were told they were not going up after all.

Jon Baglow (pictured) has resumed the Braunton captaincy after a break of three years.

Keeper-batter Ian Roberts has been leading the side, but is struggling with knee injuries and finding it hard to play week in and week out.

The first thing Baglow has done is go out and sign batsman Neil Bettis, who has been out of the game for a couple of years.

Bettis, a former Devon regular, has had stints with North Devon and Sandford in the past but virtually dropped out of cricket in 2012 to play golf instead.

Braunton have had it tough in recent season, a cycle Baglow wants to end.

“We have been in four or five relegation battles in the last five years, so the first aim is to avoid another,” said Baqlow.

“I am still looking to add to the team with further additions if possible.

“Now I'm captain I will be trying to contact a few people to see if they would be interested.

“Having someone of Neil's quality and experience might help that process.”

Baglow said he hasn’t had any resignations and another aim is to get a settled side out.

“If everyone was available throughout the season we will be ok.

“Martin Smith took 23 wickets but only played around seven or eight games.”
