Carpenter man of the match as Devon race to T20 victory in S Africa

TORQUAY’S Sam Carpenter was man of the match for the touring Devon Development XI in their 36-run T20 win over Skukuza Lowfield.

Carpenter top scored with 46 at run-a-ball rate as Devon made 118 for two against their South African hosts.

The Torquay Boys’ Grammar School pupil hit five fours and shared in stands of 33 with James Degg and 53 with James Doble (23).

Skukuza, who play in Kruger National Park, steamed along to 60 for none in reply – then came a cropper once Carpetner was wheeled into the attack.

Three wickets fell on 60, six had gone by the time the total reached 70 and the hosts collapsed to 82 all out with Carpenter taking five for 13 in four overs.

Max Hancock picked up two for 14.

The South Africans had their revenge in a second T20 match played the same day, which they won by 13 runs after racking up 148 for two.

Bovey Tracey’s Sam Taylor top scored with 33 off 27 balls in Devon’s response of 135 for seven.
