North Devon recruit SA U19 World Cup star Verreynne

SOUTH African U19 international Kyle Verreynne is on the way to North Devon as their overseas player for the Premier season ahead.

Verreyenne played for South Africa in the recent Under-19 World Cup hosted by Bangladesh.

The keeper-batter from Pretoria, who won’t be 19 until the second week of May, averaged more than 30 with the bat and had 10 victims behind the stumps.

Overall he has played 17 times for South Africa at under-19 level in onep-day cricket and is averaging in the high 20s.

He made his First Class debut for Western Province as a 17-year-old in January 2015 in a three-day Sunfoil Cup game against Griqualand West.

Verreynne progressed through the Western Province age-groups from under-13 level upwards and has appeared for Cape Cobras Cubs and Cape Town.

He won two man-of-the-match for South Africa in the Under-19 World Cup, for an unbeaten 64 against Scotland and won another two days later for leading South Africa to victory over Ireland with a knock of 77.

Barney Huxtable, the North Devon captain, has high hopes of Verreynne, who comes from the same background as Jason Smith, the club’s hugely successful overseas player in 2013, who averaged more than 50 for the 1st XI.

Smith is now a regular in the Western Province three-day side and the 50-over team.

“Kyle looks a very good player and should strengthen out batting line-up,” said Huxtable.

“Jason went from a good season with us into an Under-19 World Cup and his career has flourished from there.”

North Devon have lost spin-bowling all-rounder Callum French to Exmouth as he lives in Exeter and was finding the travelling to Instow difficult.

A familiar face back in the Sandhills this summer is that of former captain Matt Westaway, who took last season off to work on his golf.

Westaway (pictured) consistently took wickets for North Devon - 140 of them between 2010-2014 – as well as scoring useful lower-order runs in times of crisis.

A season off has only sharpened Westaway’s appetite for the game.

“Golf is ok but there's nothing like the banter you get on a Saturday afternoon playing cricket,” said Westaway.

“I spent Saturdays last year looking at cricket results and I now feel keen to go again.

“I am looking forward to playing cricket with a great bunch of lads in a great location.

“I still feel I've got something to give and hope to contribute.”
