PREMIER champions Torquay have lost a key member of their title winning side with the departure of all-rounder Max Waller.
Waller, a one-day specialist contracted to Somerset, topped the Premier Division bowling averages last season with 33 scalps at 6.67 each.
Those were record-busting statistics, smashing the Premier-best average of 8.4 wickets each set by Aqeel Ahmed for Barton in 2004.
Waller also averaged nearly 40 with the bat from eight trips to the middle for Torquay.
Waller wasn’t the only reason Torquay won their first Premier title since 1997 – Mitch Pugh with 734 runs and Matt Petherbridge with another 33-wicket haul – had plenty to do with it – but his contribution was significant.
After four seasons at the Recreation Ground, Waller has informed Torquay he won’t be returning in 2016.
Although Waller has not told Torquay what his plans are, it is thought A Division side Budleigh Salterton are keen to sign him.
Torquay have already lost batsman and Devon captain Matt Thompson to St Fagans in South Wales. They are unlikely to see much of Ryan Stevenson or Kazi Szymanski this season due to their commitments with Hampshire and Glamorgan Academy respectively.
Losing Waller is a blow skipper Justin Yau could have done without, although he has taken it philosophically.
“Max is a fantastic and competitive figure who has left a brilliant legacy at the club and we wish him well in the future,” said Yau.
“He is an outstanding professional and will no doubt be an excellent acquisition for whoever comes in for him.”
