Devon U13's v Hampshire U13's
It's not that bad, Skipper!!!
BUDDY CAN YOU SPARE A DIME!
The normal Sunday morning for the Management team. A message from Monty to say he was unwell following a couple of nights camping (Glastonbury??). Advised to go back to bed and get better. Further calls to confirm meet time, and a wait at Tiverton Parkway for the coach on his way up from Plymouth. Still it gave the manager time to listen to the words of wisdom from Senior Scribe, and make sure he has taken his tablets.
The nearer we get to Axminster, the better the weather. No need for the thermals this week. Met warmly at Axminster by their ever efficient team of volunteers, and a pleasure to see the Hampshire management team again. A great bunch who it is always enjoyable spend time with.
As we have batted first all season, ask tongue in cheek if Hampshire mind having first knock. Nearly don't get as far as tossing to find out. Embarrassment all round as two umpires, two managers and two captains stand sheepishly around with no coin between them. (No surprise that the visitors are cashless. They are the Hampshire Royals, and royalty never carries money). Anyway, Martin Causey to the rescue with a 10p coin. Toss won by Hampshire who decide to bat. Thanks, guys.
The wicket looks dry and tired, and prompts some debate in the team as to how it will play. Time will tell. Kazi opens the bowling and gets swing early on, bowling the opener in his first over. This is to be the only early success, as the Hampshire batters take full advantage of anything loose in the first 10 overs, whilst fielding restrictions are in place. Devon get an unexpected bonus as Matt Parker persuades the Hampshire number 3 to hit the ball straight up in the air with the last delivery of his spell. Ash Causey takes the catch.
Tom Williams and Dan Bullock then operate an all spin attack. It is soon clear that the less pace there is on the ball, the more difficult it is to bat. The bounce is on the low side. It takes Tom a while to find his length. On another day he may find the skipper less accommodating. After 3 mediocre overs he finds his length and bowls the dangerous looking Gadd for 43. Dan has a wicket at the other end, and all of a sudden batting seems perilous. Hampshire, to the obvious frustration of their coach, have not grasped the importance of playing forward and straight against the spinners. Williams finishes his spell with 2 more wickets, bowled, and Leon Horn replaces Dan at the other end.
Leon gets a wicket in his first over and proceeds to dominate the tail order. His 6 overs go for only 10 runs and he gets 3 LBW decisions as the batters look to play back and across to his leg spin. Hampshire are dismissed for 132 and tea is delayed as the Hampshire management explain to their players how they might have played differently on this pitch. The Devon management use the time to ask the Devon players how they might bat!! Play straight and forward is the plan.
Ash Causey gets the chance to open with Jamie Khan. They plan to be positive against the openers to keep the scoreboard moving. The best laid plans and all that...... Ash is LBW to the pace bowler. At least he played forward and straight. Shame he missed it. Enter Callum Worth, promoted to number 3, where he bats for club and district. Sadly he perishes early, bowled without score.
Tom Lammonby joins Jamie and they take the score from 12 to 41 before Jamie plays back and across and is bowled for 20. True to his word he has been much more positive this week. Tom continues where he left off last week, hitting the spinner over the top and then pushing for singles when the field is back. Skipper Maunder comes and goes, surprisingly bowled attempting to play the spinner to third man.
Tom Lammonby
Enter Kazi Szymanski who is happy to play a supporting role as Tom continues to punish anything loose. they break the back of the run chase with a partnership of 35, before Tom is bowled for a well crafted 40 playing his first ungainly shot. Kazi takes the senior role and gets the team over the line with the help of Jack Gibbs (11) and Leon Horn. Kazi's 28* comes after an hour at the crease, and from 50 balls. Another mature knock.
A 3 wicket victory, a few scares along the way, but in the end comfortable. We could have bowled better, and maybe used our bowlers more effectively, but this team is now used to winning and has shown it can do so either batting first or second. A week off now. It will be interesting to see how focussed the team is in a fortnight when we entertain Cornwall at Tavistock.
Axminster is a happy hunting ground for Devon, the welcome warm, and hopefully we can return next season.
