Whiteway Cup final day at Whimple on Bank Holiday Monday

IT’S Whiteway Cup day at Whimple on Bank Holiday Monday when the semi-finals and final are played back to back to create a T20 feast.

Whimple play Kentisbeare in the first final at 10.30 am, followed by Cullompton against Kilmington in the second semi-final. The final is due to be played at 4.00 pm.

The bar will be open and food available from the barbecue.

The day will also be Whimple’s ECB open day in conjunction with Waitrose.

The competition is played in memory of Richard Whiteway, who was a well-known figure in Devon cricket from the end of World War Two to his death in a car accident in 1980.

Dick Whiteway was Whimple secretary for 40 years and a member of the Devon Countty Cricket Club committee for 30.

He joined the Devon Cricket Association in 1947 and was its chairman from 1957 until the day he died.

Whiteway was also a playing member and latterly president of the Devon Dumplings.

And those were just his cricket interests.

Having played and refereed rugby as a younger man, Dick Whiteway threw himself into hockey, serving as Devon Cup secretary, county president and Devon representative on the league committee.

He helped found two clubs – Exeter Crickets Hockey Club and the East Devon Squash Club. He was secretary of the Devon SRA for a while.

Away from the sports field he was chairman of Whimple Parish Council and managing director of Whiteways of Whimple.

Dick Whiteway was driving to watch a rugby match involving Sherborne Pilgrims, of which he was president, when he was involved in a fatal car accident.
