A Division - crunch coming for Paignton

CHUDLEIGH captain Ed Foreman can see the upside to his teams trials and tribulations this term.

The A Division new boys are winless going into the meeting with Lewdown, who came up with them.

Hatherleigh and Chudleigh are starting to drift away at the bottom of the table, but Foreman remains confident results will perk up.

“Results are on there way it's just a case of staying positive and concentrating on the basics,” said Foreman.

“The learning curve is steep for our young side and all the lessons we learn this year will only make us stronger in years to come. “

Will Heather is unavailable and is replaced by Dan Britcliffe, who should add extra batting strength.

Lewdown have gone a couple of weeks without a win, but are in the top half of the table despite their loss at Paignton.

Skipper Harry Geering isn’t expecting an easy time against Chudleigh – weather permitting.

“Us and chudliegh have been competitive over the last two years and I'm sure Saturday will be the same.

“We will be looking to bounce back from the Paignton game with a win.”

Ben Williams – four wickets against Paignton - is missing and young spinner Leon Horn drops down to the 2nd XI.

Mark Gibbs and Matt Witcher are away.

Batter Gary Sizmur is back from a wedding. Phil Yeo returns in and tom Pengelly is in to keep.

Paignton’s promotion campaign is about to get tougher with games against their main rivals.

That’s the view of slipper Conor Bryan before the meeting with Bradninch tomorrow.

Paignton are joint top with Budleigh, whom they play next week.

And with deposed leaders Barton before the end of June, the heat is on.

“Our next few games are massive for us,” said Bryan.

“We will be playing teams such as Budleigh and Bradninch, who I am expecting to be up there with us at the end off the season.

“Our form so far this season has been fantastic and I really don't think as a team I could have asked for much more.

“We don't however want to do what we did previously and let this form dip.

“We have learnt those mistakes and feel we are in a better place to push for promotion this season.”

Abbotskerswell captain Richard Acton wants to keep the wining streak going when his team visit Hatherleigh.

Bradninch and Chudleigh have been seen off so Acton can feel the momentum building.

“The game on Saturday represents a great chance to make it three wins in a row,” said Acton.

“If our bowling continues to fire, and a couple of batsman find some form, then we will be tough to beat.”

Abbots’ team news is that. Steve Bowman replaces Marcus Green, Raghav Pratap is in for super-veteran Paul Mitchell and Charlie Mitchell replaces Guy Harrison-Roberts behind the stumps.

Hatherleigh haven’t won yet and captain Mark Lake didn’t pull any punches weighing up the position.

“I see this as the biggest game of the season so far and I will take no less than a win,” said Lake.

“We cannot afford to get any further behind.

“I feel we have a team capable of beating anyone in this division,, but at the moment we just aren't scoring enough runs to give teams a good run for their money.

“We need to stand up and be counted before we find ourselves in an impossible position.”

Simon Gillespie is back for Charlie Nielson in the only change.

PLYMPTON have been given a boost for the rest of the season by the return of Craig Miles.

The former Devon U21s all-rounder hasn’t featured often over the past coupe of seasons due to work commitments, but has become available again.

And after a couple of outings in the 2nd XI, Miles is in to face Barton at Cricketfield Road tomorrow.

“It is a big bonus having Craig back for the summer,” said skipper James Carr.

“He has scored some runs in the 2nd XI and looks good in the nets.

“That’s another player with a lot of Premier experience who adds that bit of grit were missing at the moment in the batting.”

With Ross Farrer and Dave Wrench both back, Plympton do have some Premier quality for what will be a tough assignment.

“It’s good to have Ross and Wrenchy back as they add much needed depth to the batting as well as being two of our strongest fielders,” said Carr.

“Ross will take the captaincy with myself and Craig Donohue missing and I know it will be in safe hands as he captained our 2nd XI a few years ago so knows what it’s all about.”

Plympton defeated Hatherleigh last time out when a total of 82 proved enough to win by 22 runs.

Carr isn’t convinced Plympton would get away with such a low total at Barton.

“Our bowling is working well and except for the poor performance against Lewdown our fielding has been as good as it has ever been,” he said.

“All we need now is to bat better, and really value our wickets.

“We got away with it on Saturday but I know for sure if the same happens this Saturday we wont as Barton are playing some good, hard cricket at the moment.

“It’s never easy going to Barton at the best of times but especially when they are playing well.

“We are going to have to be at our best and if we are, I am confident we will beat them.

“We beat them twice last season, its about us hitting our straps and getting our heads down for the rest of the season and work our way back up the table.”

Barton welcome back their former Devon wicketkeeper-batsman Andy Hele, who replaces Chris Penna in the side.

Elsewhere, joint leaders Budleigh go to Brixham.

“We expect t be at full strength, which is absolutely essential down there as you never know what to expect from them,” said Budleigh skipper Joel Murphy.
