MORE than two years’ hard work has paid off for Alphington with the opening of the club’s new net complex.

Alphington have a growing youth section with teams across the age groups in the Bradleys East Devon League

What the club didn’t’ have was a decent area to practice on, but they do now thanks to a sizeable helping hand from the Coastal Recycling Community Fund.

Fund manager based just a six-hit away from Alphington’s ground on the Matford Business Park were approached for help with the £29,000 cost of the project.

A grant of £22,000 from the fund was topped up by Alphington’s own fund-raising efforts.

The new nets were officially opened by club president Mike Ainscough and Lyn Chadwick from the fund, who dropped in on a youth practice session.

Steve Baxter, the Alphington chairman gave a short speech prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony thanking everyone who had helped raise money towards the project.

And Baxter had some special words of thanks for the Coastal Recycling Community Fund.

“We are grateful to Coastal for their financial help,” said Baxter.

“The new practice area will enable us to develop the standards of cricket for all our members, with particular focus in the youth section.

“The caged area provides a safe environment for us to develop the stars of the future.”

Since 1998 more than 200 projects have been supported by Coastal Recycling through their fund.

Money in the fund comes from a Government tax allowance scheme to recycling companies such as Coastal.

Chadwick, the fund manager, said the club’s application for a grant caught the eye because of the obvious benefits the facility would bring to the community.

She added: “We are very happy to have been able to help with some funding and will watch the club’s progress with interest.”
