The winning Bovey Tracey team with the Aaron Printers Cup after beating Babbacombe in the final
DAN Green had a night to remember as Bovey Tracey 2nd XI defeated Babbacombe by three wickets at South Devon to carry off the Aaron Printers Cup.A devastating spell of bowling that earned figures of five wickets for 29 runs slowed Babbacombe down after they had reached 111 for one.
With Mark Gribble, Jerry Christophers and Toby Codd keeping it tight at the other end, Babbacombe finished on 148 for six – respectable but gettable.
Bovey were an anxious 19 for three in reply when Green was joined by Charlie Sheen in the middle.
The recovery started with a stand of 47 before Sheen (18) was caught behind off Cameron Fryer (3-18).
Green cut loose after that and smacked a rapid 78 to put Bovey in touching distance of victory.
There was a brief wobble when skipper Jeremy Christophers came and went for a single. But the target by then was six to win in three overs and Chris Yabsley and George Pitman and Dom Whitlock got Bovey over the line with an over to spare. “Dan – the Green Machine’ - has found himself as cricketer,” said Christophers.
“He has always had a load of potential. The added responsibility as 3rd XI captain, has meant that he values his wicket more which means that he is more selective in his power hitting.
“He actually defends the good ball, anything else goes over the ropes. He is a freak, in the nicest way.”
Babbacombe openers Andy Kingdon (41) and Fryer (53no) put on 95 for the first wicket, punctuated a break while Fryer was treated after being hit on the hand by a full-blooded return throw from a fielder.
Kingdon, playing against one of his former clubs, was caught behind to give Green his first scalp.
Fryer kept going but at the other end Green was whipping out his partners.
All four of Green’s ensuing wickets were bowled with the spectacular uprooting of Mike Pugh’s middle stump a sight to behold.
Fryer and Paul Bates had Bovey on the ropes before Green and Sheen started making inroads.
Sheen ran well between the wickets for his 18 while Green flogged the bowling at the other end.
Green was dropped once with 45 still needed and that was a crucial slip for Babbacombe as Christophers was the only senior batsman left in the hutch.
By the time Green had finished – he hit seven sixes and five fours – it would have needed something special to stop Bovey and Babbacombe didn’t have it.
Babbacombe 148-6 (C Fryer 53, A Kingdon 41; D Green 5-29), Bovey Tracey 2nd XI 152-7 (D Green 78, C Sheen 18; C Fryer 3-19). Bovey Tracey bt Babbacombe by 3 wkts.
