Barton up to second

BARTON are up to second in the A Division after an eight-wicket win over relegation worriers Hatherleigh.

Stuart Bowker took four for 32 and Tom Drake two for 27 as Hatherleigh were held to 162 for nine.

Shaun Needham’s quickfire 73 pointed Barton towards a comfortable win with nearly 20 overs to spare.

Only three points separate Barton and leaders Paignton with a big Bay derby between them coming up on June 28.

Hatherleigh are already 29 points adrift in the bottom two and can’t afford slip up against fellow strugglers Chudleigh this Saturday.

Mark Lake, the Hatherleigh captain, said his side were ‘very poor’ and added: No one is going on with the bat, meaning we are not getting enough runs.

“We bowled and fielded worse than we have all season.

“Needham batted well but gave him a couple chances early doors and fed him a lot of four balls to put away.

“If we play like that again, we won't be in the A Division next season.”

Simon Gillespie’s 32 was the best of a modest set of scores for Hatherleigh, slumped from 110 for three to when he got out to 138 for eight.

Needham, who hit 13 of the four balls Lake was complaining about, and Scott Bellamy got Barton up to 45 for one.

Drake (41no) added 82 for the second wicket with Needham, leaving Damon Calland (22no) to tie up the loose ends.

Barton are away to Bradninch this Saturday.
