B DIVISION – WEEK FIVE
CHAGFORD paid a high price for dropping Plymstock’s Dom Wood before he got off the mark – he hammered their attack for a ton.
Wood made the most of his let off to score exactly100 in a Plymstock total of 297 for eight.
Wood and Rory Coltham (43 put on 131 for the second wicket. Josh Hocken (34) and Adam Richards (34) chipped in.
Chagford skipper Derek Lammonby’s four for 78 was as good as it got for the home side, who were bowled out for 194 in reply.
Billy Searle (34), Lammonby (29) and Matt Bowes (24) got Chagford up t o 168 for five, the it all turned sour.
Plymstock captain Dave Orchard (6-44) had the magic touch as Chagford collapsed to 194 all out.
Victory keeps Plymstock top of the pile on 85 points, 11 clear of second-placed South Devon who drew with near neighb ours Chudleigh.
Chudleigh were all out for 228 from the last ball of their innings – Tertius Gouws topping the run charts with 70.
South Devon had Chudleigh struggling at six for two, but a stand of 94 between Gouws and Ed Foreman (33) repaired the damage. Dan LeMarquand (28) and Matt Heather notched 60 as well.
Henry Burningham with four for 45 was the pick of the South Devon bowlers.
South Devon were always up against it after dipping to 63 for four on the chase with Tom Carter (30), Adrian Hewings (22) and former Chudleigh captain Mark Halse (22) all in and out.
Peter Vorster batted most of the way through for 75 as South Devon got to maximum batting points with 200 for eight.
Chudleigh shared the wickets around with Gowus (2-43) and Jack Vittles (2-61) doing as well as anyone.
Chudleigh did enough to stay out of the bottom two. Skipper Jon Martin is confident a few more performances like this one will see his side start to climb the table.
“After winning the toss and batting on a pretty flat wicket, I was more than happy putting 228 on the board,” said Martin.
“I always thought that was just a bit too much for South Devon with our bowling.
“South Devon did look like they had a small chance, but once we got Vorster out that chance went .
“We never really looked like bowling them out either on a pitch that if you didn’t throw your wicket awayu it was quite hard to bowl a side out on.
“What we have to do now is keep working on our consistency , keep putting all three sides of our game together and keep getting results.”.
Clyst St George skipper Matt Cook said his side are resigned to a scrap to dodge relegation after losing for the fifth game on the bounce.
Despite a brave effort by Chris Cook (82), Clyst were bowled out for 232 in reply to Dartington & Totnes’ 247 all out.
Totnes wheeled out a secret weapon in the latter stages of the game when wicketkeeper Bertus Loots took his pads off and came on to bowl.
Loots took three for 12, which hastened Clyst’s demise.
Said Cook: “Loots got Nick Dubuisson out lbw with the last ball of the game , which was tough for us to take,
“We deserved a losing draw out of the game at the very least, but after five defeats we know we have a fight for survival on our hands.
“When everyone is available we are as strongas mst team s in this division and as the season goes on our results will improve.
“The problem is we have made such a bad start there is a lot of catching up to do.”
Kyle Blanchard (77) top scored for D&T, featuring in a stand of 97 for the second wicket with Ryan Stevenson (32), Jack Hocking (39) chipped in.
Chris Cook took three for 50 for Clyst while Tim Downer had four for 80 in his first game for a while.
As long as Chris Cook was there Clyst had a chance, but when he went it got difficult.
Steve Bourke (28) and George Randall-Johnson (30) did their bit, but the Stevenson brothers –Ryan (w2-25) and Scott (4-48) worked their way through the middle order before Loots wrapped things up.
Axminster held out for a draw against Tavistock after realising 237 to win was well beyond them.
Will Simpson (38) and Rhys Davies (54) were gave Tavvy a 91-run start and with Shaun Daymond (53) and Aaron Churchill (31) chipping in they reached 236 for nine. Alex Wraight had four for 70 and Axes’ skipper Paul Miller three for 25.
Axminster ran out of puff long before the end and meandered to 169 for eight. Tris Wakeley (39) and Matt Pyle (34) made the best of the scores.
Chris Hutchings and Shaun Cleave had three wickets each.
Thorverton lost by three wickets to Barnstaple & Pilton in a game that went right down to the last ball.
James Hope hit 50 early on for Thorverton, wh totalled 181 for nine.
Skippers past and presen t Nick Taverner (25) and Ali Fury (35) both chipped in.
Thors found the turning ball hard to play as Steve Moore (2-31) and Henry McEndoo (4-42) proved.
George McEndoo (54) pointed B&P in the right direction, but tight bowling from Jake Choules (2-40) and Fury (4-35) slowed them up.
Lee Cole (27no) hit the final ball of the match from Will Denford for four to win the game.
