BOVEY Tracey stay hard on the heels of Sidmouth at the top of the Premier Division table after a hefty six-wicket win at North Devon. The Instow outfit opted to bat first and were bowled out for 164 in the last of their 50 overs.
Only Dan Bowser (33) in the top half of the order made any headway as Peter Bradley (4-27) and Neil Hancock (2-20) got stuck in.
Mark Westaway went in at 70 for seven and staved of total collapse with a battling 43.
After Matt Dart went straight away, last man Paul Heard (32no) put on 94 for the final wicket before Westaway was bowled by spinner Charlie Hill (2-28).
Bovey had the runs knocked off inside 39 overs, led from the front by skipper and man of the match Bradley with 61.
By the time Bradley was second out at 103 – Westaway luring him out of his ground to give Rob Ayre a stumping – Bovey were well on their way.
Andy Fairbairn and Hancock went cheaply, but Matt Golding (29no) and Sam Wyatt-Haines (13no) saw it through.
It’s Torquay at home next for Bovey, who are just a point behind Sidmouth, the only other unbeaten side left in the top flight after four games.
Bovey captain Peter Bradley said North Devon contributed massively to their own misfortune, which masked one or two things his side didn’t do that well.
“We had North Devon 70 for nine and their last pair put on 94, which was the biggest stand of the match,” said Bradley.
“That really should not have happened, but it does tell you batting conditions were pretty good after all.
“A lot of the North Devon batsmen played rash shots and got themselves out, we just helped a few of them by taking our catches.
“It was a good win, but we can play better and need to in future.”
North Devon captain Matt Dart, who didn’t bowl as he was struggling with the effects of flu, didn’t disagree massively with Bradley.
“We are still showing no application with the bat and our bowling attack is not capable of defending 150,” said Dart.
“It was a miracle we scored 164. Westaway and Heard batted out of their skins, but we can't rely on 10 and 11 to score runs.”
