Pugh back as Brixham look at Prem push... maybe

BRIXHAM’S new captain Andy Pugh is aiming for promotion but not necessarily this season.

Pugh, who played more than 200 times for Devon and appeared for the England Board XI in his prime, has been lured back into 1st XI cricket after a break of three years.

He has had the odd knock in the 2nd XI over the past few seasons, but thought he had retired.

Since the end of last season, and following the death of his father, Pugh’s interest in serious cricket has been reawakened.

Pugh believes Brixham can be a Premier club again – they were 20 years ago – the question is when?

“Our attitude is we would like to reach the Premier Division, and the players we have could get us there,” said Pugh.

“Getting there is one thing, but to be competitive we probably need to add three or four players.

“There are some good players coming through the club now and it may be promotion would be a good thing next season.

“I will have a better idea of how well equipped we are for Premier cricket around the half way stage. We can talk about it then.”

Brixham look serious about challenging for a top spot this season looking at the squad Pugh has assembled.

Jordan Gregory, a left-arm spinner from Durban, has come over having impressed against Brixham while on tour with Futura Sports last year.

Gary Spencer, an old team-mate of Pugh’s from their Barton days together and another left-arm spinner, has also signed on the dotted line.

“Gary was originally lined up as cover while Craig Eaves is away, but is bowling better than I can remember and may have a longer role to play,” said Pugh.

Mark Orchard is back at his home-town club following a season at Exmouth, when he won a Premier title. He will take the new ball against Chudleigh this Saturday with Joe Hyde, who has impressed Pugh pre-season.

Paul Heath, fast approaching the veteran stage, will be more readily available than he has been for a while, which adds to Pugh’s options with bat and ball.

Tim Robinson has returned from Bovey Tracey and with Lee Upham and Eaves to reappear later in the season, competition for places will be keen.
