Chance to Shine
In just three weeks time Seaton, Chulmleigh and Ottery St. Mary Cricket Clubs will join a growing number when they begin a programme of coaching and competition in local primary and secondary schools supported by Chance to Shine.

These clubs will receive a financial leg-up and Cricket Board support to start new coaching programmes aimed at achieving the following outcomes:

Competition – increase opportunities for inter/intra school cricket

Player Pathway – increased numbers of children within club junior sections

School Engagement – work with schools to embed cricket within the schools sporting provision

Sustainability – develop capacity and capability for an enduring legacy

As part of their programme all clubs will engage with local schools to create timetables of delivery for ECB qualified coaches to undertake, as well as creating a competitive match programme for each school.

In addition to the new club projects that will begin shortly after Easter, 'soon to be' appointed Community Cricket Coaches will take up posts as a result of Chance to Shine's financial committment into the county.  Appointments will be made shortly so that clubs and schools in both South Dartmoor and West Devon receive added support to help increase the number of children playing cricket and then migrating into clubs.

"This year is a record breaking year for us.  Chance to Shine will assist over 20 clubs and approximately 100 schools in Devon.  With the re-introduction of Community Cricket Coaches working in clubs and schools, more children than ever will be exposed to cricket and will be given the opportunity to play our vibrant game" said Matt Theedom, Development Manager.

He finished by adding, "Should a school or club wish to find out more or even make a request to enter the scheme in 2013, I would love to hear from them.  The Devon Cricket Board are responsible for the successful running of the Chance to Shine programme in the county and we would like to help as many schools and clubs as possible to create sustainable partnerships".

Steve Peyman, Operations Director at the Cricket Foundation, said: “Our clubs are the backbone of Chance to Shine and are critical to the success of the programme. The club managers help to coordinate the delivery of high quality coaching and competitions to schools and, as a result, over 39,509 children have joined local clubs from schools since Chance to Shine launched in 2005.”

The Cricket Foundation, an independent registered charity, believes that team sports - and cricket in particular – can help young people to develop as people. Cricket promotes leadership and teamwork; teaches youngsters how to win and lose respectfully; and gives opportunities to boys and girls.

Last year, 347,390 boys and girls in 3,807 state schools across the country participated in over 45,000 cricket matches through Chance to Shine. 46 per cent of the children involved last year were girls. Tens of thousands of children in Chance to Shine schools were also introduced to the key MCC Spirit of Cricket messages enshrined in the Laws of the game, in the second year of a successful partnership between the Cricket Foundation and Marylebone Cricket Club.

The £50million charitable campaign is supported financially by England and Wales Cricket Board, Brit Insurance, Slazenger and Marylebone Cricket Club and many other companies and private individuals, as well as the Government through Sport England. “Our involvement in Chance to Shine has been fantastic so far. We have seen an increase in the number of girls attending our club, as a direct result of our Chance to Shine coaching in schools. It has also helped to increase the profile of our club and we have forged strong links with local schools.”

Charlie Dibble - Sidmouth Cricket Club

England’s Ashes winner and Chance to Shine Ambassador, Graeme Swann said: “I went to a state school which didn’t play cricket but was lucky enough to be given the chance to play because of my dad. But there are literally millions of youngsters out there who will never be given the opportunity and that is sad. What Chance to Shine has done is fantastic and if, through them, we unearth another Ian Botham, Kevin Pietersen or Freddie Flintoff then great; but the main aim is just to get more people playing from an early age and encourage them to play the game at whatever level they are comfortable with.”
