C and D Division - McKenna fifth in all-time runs list with 181

C DIVISION

OTTERY skipper Lewis Townsend is looking for a bounce-back performance when his side visit Shaldon.

Townsend was frustrated by the lack of application show by his batters after the bowlers s et up a winning position against Plymouth CS&R.

Civil were limited to 168 for four – the Gaylard brothers Rob (52) and Brian (45) scoring the bulk of them –but Ottery slumped to 88 all out in reply. Their last five wickets went for 11 runs.

“We bowled and fielded superbly,” said Townsend. “Jody Clements and Matt Reed with great control, while Joe Birch (pictured) was quick and accurate

“At tea we were happy with our position. “Unfortunately, we were masters of our own downfall with the bat, through a combination of poor shots and silly run outs.

“We put ourselves in a poor position and were bowled out cheaply.

“Credit to Civil. They took the opportunities that came their way

“With the batting line up we had we should really have been chasing that total.”

SHALDON batsman Seamus McKenna wrote his name in the Devon League record books by walloping 181 in the 102-run win at Kingsbridge.

McKenna, who spent the winter in Australia honing his game in Grade Cricket, has been in the wickets rather than the runs so far this season with five against Clyst Hydon and seven against Chagford.

Shaldon weren’t looking to chipper at Kingsbridge, where they were 59 for four after encountering difficulties against Neil Peach (3-32) and Bhanu DaSilva.

Jimmy Fulner had been and gone for 26 on his return to Shaldon – caught at long-on going for a big hit.

McKenna and Richard Boss stabilised the situation by putting on 93 and the batting starts were impressive.

Mckenna reached his half century after 47 balls and then his century after a further 22.

When Boss went for 15 the job of keeping an end up went to skipper Craig Greenwood, who more than did his bit.

They had a partnership of 58 before Greenwood was caught in the covers by Peach off Chris Clark for 15.

Carl Woolnough helped McKenna through to his 150 after a further 35 balls. Woolnough made 11 in a stand of 48.

After Andy Epsley came and went, McKenna was bowled by Westlake for 181 off 113 balls.

Greenwood declared at 292 for nine with a bonus point in mind for an early win. He got it as Kingsbridge folded for 186.

Westlake top scored with 57. Woolnough (3-40) and Danny McKenna (2-16) led the bowling effort.

Seamus McKenna sits fifth in the all-time list of C Division scorers, which is headed by Bob Merrifield’s 255 against Cornwood in 1984. Between him and McKenna are Ivybridge’s Cody Morris (220 v Ipplepen, 2006), Johnny Hurford of Axminster (200 v Clyst SG, 2013) and Heathcoat’s Ruan Nell (185 v Stoke Gabriel, 2004).

Greenwood said it had been a privilege to be at the other end during McKenna’s innings.

“It was magnificent to watch a young man play such fantastic cricket,” said Greenwood.

“Even the umpire was flabbergasted to see such a great innings.

“Although Seamus scored the majority of the runs it was a fantastic team performance.

Everybody played a part towards the win and the team morale was at its highest.”

PAUL Hooper hit a six to reach his half-century and win the game as South Devon beat Chagford by seven wickets.

Chagford were always second favourites after they were bowled out for 115 – South African Divan Marais making 69 of them.

Jonny Martin took five for 40 and Dave Knowles three for 27 as Chagford stumbled from 59 for two to 86 for six and on to 115 all out.

South Devon set off in pursuit with Knowles (19) and Sean Day (20) making early runs.

Hooper was on 46 with one needed to win and the only way to get his 50 was by hitting a six. Youngster Will Lammonby was on the receiving end.

Victory was achieved without any assistance from former Devon captain Neil Hancock, who had a business engagement he could not avoid.

South Devon, who entertain Kingsbridge this Saturday, are three points behind leaders Ipplepen at the top.

Hancock, pacer Neil Maud and seamer Richard Beumont all come back into selection contention this week.

Skipper Ali Wright said: “With all those players missing it is reassuring we can put in a performance like this.

“We were strong with bat and ball again and seem to be growing as a team.

“Paul Hooper played brilliantly for his 50 and looks better each time he plays.”

CLYST Hydon slipped into the C Division bottom two when they went down by five wickets at Dartington & Totnes.

Take away Dhanuda Haturusingha’s 58 and Graham Trude’s 26 and there wasn’t a lot from the rest in Hydon’s 127 all out.

Ryan Stevenson (3-7) was a bit too quick for the Hydon batters. Bowling back up came from Bertus Loots, Jono Colgte and Ben Hartridge with two wickets each.

Steve Rew (35) and Jack Marwick (35) got the early runs for Totnes, leaving Kevan Throgmorton (42no) to seal the deal.

Plymouth CS&R beat Ottery to move ahead of Clyst, who will hope for an upturn in fortunes when they take on Chagford this Saturday.

ALPHINGTON skipper Stuart Shaw isn’t reading a great deal into last Saturday’s defeat by Ipplepen.

The Alphas, the Pens and South Devon are the early front runners in the C Division so any meeting between them has something on it.

Pens made 209 all out – Sam Wakeham making a rapid 59 after being dropped first ball – then bowled Alphington out of 116.

Shaw hopes to grab some of the points back this Saturday when Plymouth CS&R visit the Chronicles.

“We had a couple of people missing from our strongest side – Andy Wilson and Dinesh Raheja – but still should have been good enough to beat them,” said Shaw.

“Wakeham was dropped first ball and really went to down after that – fair play to him

“We really didn’t do ourselves any favours by bowling nearly 40 wides either.

“Had we held the catch and bowled straighter, it would have been a different game.

“I will be disappointed if we don’t get the points back when we play them at our place.”

Jack Lewis (46) made early runs for Pens, Wakeham got some at the end and a whopping 58 extras more than helped.

There were three wickets each for Lee Rowe and Tom Bath and two for Shaw.

Alphington were all out for 116 in reply,Caleb Gaylard and Paul Thomas taking three wickets each,

Kiwi Gaylard snared Alphas’ opener Dave Haysom in the first over, but reached 61 for two without to many dramas with Matt Shepherd (36) and Bath (27) in the runs.

D DIVISION

FILLEIGH were too good for Uplyme in their D Division clash, running out comfortable eight-wicket winners.

Encouragingly for Filleigh it was two of their promising teenagers who knocked off the runs.

Jon Hickman took three for 14 and there were two wickets each for Ryan Bowden and Kieran Jerrett as Uplyme were bowled out for 113.

McAuley Harrison-Hotton (47no) and Tim Henry (31) got most of the target out of the way.

Fileigh are away to Whitchurch this Saturday.
