BEN Van Niekerk slammed a maiden century as Dartington & Totnes made their intentions clear with a 55-run win at Chagford.
The South African teenager went in at 14 for two and by the time he left D&T were on 189 for six.
Skipper James Howrihane (46no) and Noah Tobias (31no) put on another 73 unbroken in a total of 262 for six.
Chagford were all out for 207 – Howrihane (3-40) and Gybertus Loots (3-21) doing the damage.
Devon Marais top scored for Chagford with 54 and there were chip-ins from Duncan Manners-Chapman (40) and David Penberthy (44).
Dartington & Totnes are five points clear at the top of the table going into their game against Yelverton this Saturday.
Chagford will be looking to get a win in the derby clash with Ashburton.
KINGSBRIDGE won’t want another defeat when they entertain Stoke Gabriel this Saturday.
Kingsbridge were ‘relegated’ last season, although league re-organisation gave them a reprieve.
However, finishing in the bottom two this season will mean the dreaded drop into the basement division.
Bhanu de Silva took five for 33 as Kingsbridge dismissed Whitchurch for 161.
Kingsbridge were all out for 113 – Clive Clark (40) the only batter to make much headway.
STOKE Gabriel look in far better shape after their four-wicket win over visiting Plymouth CS&R.
Stoke were relegated last season and didn’t get the benefit of a re-organisational reprieve.
Civil were removed for 104 – Brian Gaylard making 25 – and had Stoke 30 for three at one stage in reply.
Seb Ansley (56no) and Neil Robinson (12no) got Stoke home after a few more alarms.
“Our batting was a bit shambolic, but Seb saw us to the victory our bowling deserved,” said skipper Jack Tolley.
There were two wickets each for Tolley, Issac Whittington, Ansley, Shane Lewis and Callum Tuck on a good day for the bowlers.
ASHBURTON missed out by a whisker against Yelverton last time out, going down by six runs in a thrilling finish.
Richard Goldsby-West top scored for Yelverton on 57 and Geoff Brain chipped in with 35 towards a total of 175 for nine.
Marcus West and Tom Durman bowled meanly for a wicket each, Dom Durman had two for 23 and Matt Coon three for 44.
Ashes were a bit behind the clock halfway through at 73 for four, but still had Taylor McLellan up their sleeves.
McLellan batted through with a successon of partners, notably Dom Durman (29), as Ashes got to 141 for seven with eight overs to go.
McLellan went for 64 of 103 balls and the chase fizzled out. Matt Churchill (16) was the last man out to the final ball of the game as Ashes were all out for 167.
BABBACOMBE set themselves up nicely for a trip to Plymouth CS&R this Saturday with a six-wicket win at Bridestowe.
The Moorlanders limped from 16 for two to 55 for seven and on to 84 all out.
The wickets were shared around – three for Tim Goodwin and two each for Paul Bates and Dave Williams - helped by five good catches.
“Thirty-three extras was not so good though so we have a few things still to work on there,” said Babbacombe skipper Steve Broad.
At 12 for two in reply Babbacombe were under pressure,
Broad (27) and Andy Kingdon (23) dug in and got to 57 when Kingdon slapped a full-toss straight back to mid off.
Three runs later Broad hit a half tracker straight to gully so the pressure was back on.
Sam Powell and Cameron Fryer (19no) batted well to see Babbacombe home in the 22nd over.
Vice-captain Mike Pugh missed the game due to illness – he was in hospital for part of the weekend – but Broad hopes he will be back this Saturday.
