C East - Ottery set sights on fifth straight win

OTTERY St Mary will be after a fifth successive victory when they entertain Clyst Hydon.

Ottery made it four wins on the spin with 76 points out of a possible 80 when they defeated Uplyme by 38 runs.

Billy Rudolph (97) just missed out on a century in Ottery’s total of 256 for nine. Mickey Wilkinson added 64.

Uplyme were held to 218 for five in reply – Rory O’Halloran (72) and Steve Batey (54no) leading the way.

Wickets were hard to come by, although Rob Johns picked up two for 38.

DHANUJA Haturusingha stroked 43 as Clyst Hydon eased to a five-wicket win over visiting Shaldon Optimists.

Dan Woolnough made 46 and Kiwi George Thomas 36 in Shaldon’s total of 143 for nine. Their stand of 64 was the best of the innings.

Gwillam Davies, a University of Exeter student newly signed for Clyst, has two for eight on his home debut.

Haturusingha (2-29), Chris Holmes (2-24) and Kevin Sercombe with two for five from six overs shared out the wickets.

Davies (26) and Haturusingha put on 79 to get the chase up and running after a hesitant start.

Matt Fitt was 22 not out when Clyst passed the post with 12 overs to go.

Carl Woolnough (3-33) was the best of Shaldon’s bowlers.

Oz Besley, the Clyst captain, said: “It was not the best of batting tracks, but we still did well to keep them to 143.

“We lost two early wickets, but Dan was the man for us and we had the time to bat without taking to many risks.”

Clyst make the short trip to Ottery St Mary this Saturday.

FILLEIGH had Seaton on the rack but couldn’t finish them off and it cost them a three-wicket defeat.

Seaton were 45 for five chasing Filleigh’s 173 all out – and wobbling on the chase.

Joel Seward rode his luck to make 81 not out and that was enough to get Seaton over the line.

Filleigh had clawed their way back into the game once having suffered a middle-order collapse from 74 for three to 96 for eight.  They couldn’t do it a second time.

“We lost wickets in bunches and were only able to put together two partnerships of note,” said skipper Simon Prideaux.

“We showed a lot of heart to recover from 80 for seven to score 173, thanks to a fantastic knock of 42 from 16 year old Alun Sullivan.

“We bowled and fielded well, but dropped Seward twice and that cost us the game.”

Prideaux had made 33 before it all went wrong for Filleigh as Phil Collins (5-20) and Ben Libby (2-28) went to work.

Sullivan and Gary Henry put on 68 for the ninth wicket which gave the bowlers something to defend.

And with John Hickman (3-44) and Mark Mbfona (2-50) producing the goods, Seaton were wobbling.

Seward and Ben Morgan (36) halted the slide by putting on 64, then Ollie Pinnock joined Seward in partnership worth 43 that finished the job.

Seaton skipper Morgan said: “It was certainly one of those days you get in cricket. With them eight down I’d have thought 120 was the top score they’d get.

“To be fair their tail dug deep. We found the edge a few times, but nothing was going our way.

“That said, had someone told me before the game we’d have them all out for 173, of course I’d have taken it!

“Then we got into a right pickle with the bat before finally getting home.

“A huge positive for me from this particular game is that we have shown the strength in depth we now have.

“It makes a captain’s job a lot easier when everyone knows they’ll have an important role to play at some stage either in a particular match or across the season.”

Filleigh face Feniton at home this Saturday with a familiar face back in the side.

Macauley Harrison-Hooton has changed his mind about a proposed move to A Division side Sandford and will resume his role at the top of the order.

A delighted Prideaux said: “We have had a makeshift opening partnership up to now and keep losing wickets early putting pressure on the middle order.”

BARNSTAPLE & Pilton faded on the chase at Alphington, where they were beaten by 41 runs.

A five-wicket haul for Brady Saunders (5-27) helped B&P remove Alphington for 192.

Openers Neil Murrin (41) and Anthony Shepherd (31) put on 62 or Alphington’s first wicket and there were follow-up scores from Paul James (26) and Tom Bath (41).

Barnstaple & Pilton got to 72 for two with James Russell (27) and Saunders among the scoers.

Three wickets fell for six runs added which left B&P a mountain to climb.

Skipper Steve Moore made 41, but wickets fell regularly as B&P were dismissed for 151.

Stuart Shaw, the Alphington skipper, said he was pleased to win on a day when his side was not at its best.

“I was disappointed by our batting as we ought to have made 230-240,” said Shaw.

“We got off to a good enough start, then gave away some soft wickets, which changed the complexion of the game.

“Had we batted better they would have got nowhere near us.”
