Marais the difference between Lewdown and Chudleigh

MARCO Marais cracked an unbeaten 127 as Lewdown crusied to a four-wicket win over Chudleigh.

The two sides came up side by side from the B Division this season, but since then their pathways have diverged.

Chudleigh have yet to win a game while Lewdown are mid-table after six matches.

Chudleigh mustered 166 for nine before their overs ran out – Belgian international Faisal Khaliq top scoring on 45 after coming in at 73 for six.

Khaliq shared stands of 25 with Rob Clark (14) and 35 with Jack Beer, who made just three.

Lewdown’s wicket-taking was shared between Marias (2-16), Mark Jordan (2-21) and Gary Sizmur (2-46).

Marais went in as early as the third over following the demise of Jack Williams, who was caught behind of Khaliq.

After Sizmur was bowled by Rob Clark, it was Marais who marshalled the run chase pretty effectively.

His 127 not out came off 80 balls and included 10 fours and nine sixes.

Along the way was a key stand of 70 for the fifth wicket with Jordan (12) which took the running total to 158 and broke the back of the chase.

“Considering we had three key players missing I thought we bowled and fielded well for the majority of Chudleigh’s innings,” said Lewdown captain Harry Geering.

“However we did let them get 30 odd to many in the last 15 overs.

“With both the overseas players batting well we seemed to have let teams get 30-odd to many every week, which needs to be addressed.

“With the bat we were very poor other than Marais, and wouldn't have got near the total without his big hitting as we struggled on a slow wicket against the Chudliegh spin attack.

“The batsman will need to step up in the next few games before halfway – Abbots, Hatherleigh and Brixham - which I see as key to determining where we finish.”

Disappointed Chudleigh skipper Ed Foreman said: “I thought we played a lot of good cricket and were just a bit of luck away from winning.

Marco batted very well but there was not a lot coming from the other end.

A few more runs on the board and he might have ran out of partners.

“Our performance improved from last week and that's all I can ask from the boys.”
