D DIVISION
IPPLEPEN made light work of Feniton in their D Division opener, running out seven-wicket winners at Moor Road.
It was a good day to be playing Feniton as overseas ace Norm Bedford hadn’t arrived and former Sidmouth, Paignton and South Devon batsman Martin Swannell was unavailable.
Adrian Pullin top scored with 38 but the only other Feniton batsmen to make runs was John Pyle (21) in a below-par total of 105, knocked off with relative ease by the home side for the loss of just three wickets.
Pens’ skipper Keith Wakeham had three for 24, Luke Tuckett had three for eight while Kiwi debutant Andrew Mason bagged four for 35.
The chase was routine with Joe Abbott (31) and Dave Harris (21) laying the foundations for Mason (21no) to finish the job.
Feniton made their customary losing start to the season leaving skipper Mark Kingdon to lament: “I cannot remember the last time we won an opening day league game.
“We batted woefully and got what we deserved from the game.
“We were a little under-strength as we tend to be at this early stage of a new season but that must not excuse some poor individual performances.”
Halberton were another side to lose badly on the opening day as they went down by five wickets at Sampford Peverell to visiting Yelverton.
The game might have been over earlier but for a gritty unbeaten 37 from Dan Coles who helped stop a slump that saw the home side slump from 34 without loss to 60-5. Thanks to Coles the innings made it to 123 but that was passed with ease by the visitors for the loss of five wickets, two of which fell to Paul Robins.
Disappointed skipper Jon Chilcott said: “We were poor with the bat but I still thought we had a chance but we sent down far too many full tosses.
“I do think there was an air of leave it to Paul (Robins) who is with us full-time this season.
He is a very good player for sure, but the rest of the team need to accept that they must play their part.
We had a good chat after the game and I’ll not be losing any sleep over this opening day defeat as all the lads know where we went wrong and we will be collectively looking to put it right next week.”
Ottery St Mary were six-run winners in a thriller against Bridestowe that went the distance.
George Biggs (106no), Matt Kirk (30), Skipper Jody Clements (25) and Steve Forbes (23) all chipped in as the Otters declared on 221-5.
Steve Loud (5-60) and Will Harrison (3-64) then got amongst the visiting side with great affect, the final wicket falling with Bridestowe one lusty blow from a tie!
Rain robbed Whimple of any opening day action against Plymouth Civil Service
Countess Wear proved far too strong for Whitchurch inflicting a 185-run defeat on the visiting side.
Peter Darke (91) and Kam Diaz (54) combined to take the hosts to an imposing 249-5. Diaz (3-18) and braces from Mark Davies and Adrian Nash, helped skittle Whitchurch out for just 64.
