1994 SELECT SPORTS CUP FINAL By CONRAD SUTCLIFFE
THERE was disappointment for Bovey Tracey in the final of the Select Sports KO Cup as they dipped to a 12-run defeat against Plymouth in the final at Exmouth.
It turned out to be a close-run thing for Plymouth, who seemed to be in the driving seat after amassing 179 for five in 18 eight-ball overs.
Bovey, semi-final winners over Exeter by five wickets, came at Exeter with everything they had and with opener Neil Davey cracking a blistering 56 the game seemed to be slipping away from Plymouth.
But when Davey went in the 13th over to a reaction catch off his own bowling by Roger Qe-Qe, the game turned Plymouth’s way again.
John Gosling (2-42) dismissed Adam Gribble and Andy Wakefield in the space of three balls and from then on Plymouth were definitely on top.
Bovey got down to the last over from Qe-Qe needing 25 to win and there was no way they were going to get them, although Tim Downer (13) and Paul Scott (8no) kept trying.
Plymouth’s stars with the bat were their first three of Gosling, Kevin Barrett and Dave Tall, who laid into the Bovey bowling from the word go.
Gosling hit 35 off 34 balls before missing a rare straight one from Downer (2-32) after putting on 80 with Barrett for the first wicket.
Barrett went on to make 61 off 68 balls before he was caught on the boundary by Davey trying to chip Downer over the top.
Dave Tall was left to marshal the innings. The last two over proved particularly productive with Steve Luffman, Andy Birkett and Matt Arnull rattling up 35 between them.
Gribble (3-47) went for 19 off the final over and Rob Meyer was taken for 16 in the one before.
The semi-final had been a breeze for Bovey, who overhauled Exeter’s total of 139 for six with five overs to spare.
Colin Mortimore top scored with an unbeaten 48 while Davey carried his bat for 46.
