District players kit bonanza

South benefit from equipment grant

District cricket in the South of the county has had a major boost prior to their winter training regime to the tune of £2000!
The good news story began during a South Devon Development Group meeting when a discussion arose around the best ways to support clubs in the South with the limited budget they have at their disposal. The group chaired by Devon League umpire Chris Shelton decided that purchasing brand new equipment for the districts best young players to train with was an excellent starting point.
The development group proceeded to inform the South Devon Cricket Coaches Association who run district cricket of the decision to make available £2000 for the purchase of new equipment to be used for the district cricket programme. The donation was gratefully received by the Coaches Association Chairman Jim Parker who started compiling a shopping list straight away! It was decided to supply each age group manager, 7 in total, with their very own kit bags to be used by the coaching teams working at each age group (Under 9 up to Under 15). It was a purchasing frenzy to please the even the most demanding shopper: 7 ECB CA wheely bags, 14 ball holdalls, 80 cricket balls, 150 assorted soft balls, 28 sets of stumps, 14 warm up gadgets, 7 tennis rackets and 7 first aid kits later and the £2000 had become £0.

Several of the district managers and approximately 100 youngsters have already benefited from using the kit bags. The South Under 13 manager, Richard Codd, commented 'It is a real bonus to have this brand new equipment for the players to utilise. It all looks fantastic and will be well used this winter and well beyond, although I have to admit we have already lost a ball or two in the hedge at kingskerswell...'
Coaches Association Chairman Jim Parker said 'We are making every effort to improve the opportunities offered to young players and aspiring coaches in the South, for instance every age group will have a one off training session at the brand new Sir Christopher Ondaatje Indoor Cricket Center in October to kick off the winter training sessions. Thanks to the development groups generosity the 110 district players will also have brand new equipment to use during the visit which we are really grateful for.'
