Match Report South Devon v North Devon
Ashburton Cricket Club, 28th April 2013
South Devon took full advantage of losing the toss and being asked to bat first, compiling a formidable total of 226 for 5 off their 40 overs. Sam Taylor and Sam Carpenter laid the foundations for a big score with a superb opening stand of 124. Taylor made the most of being dropped on 7 to race to a maiden 50 but there was little respite for the North’s bowlers when he was eventually dismissed for 59. Alex Harris (17) rotated the strike intelligently to give the in-form Carpenter most of the strike and the pair put on 64 in good time before Carpenter was finally out for an impressive 72. The rest of the South’s middle order all played selflessly in the chase for quick runs and although Rothery and Whittaker picked up late wickets none of the North’s bowlers were able to stem the flow of runs effectively.
Facing a
daunting total, the North’s reply got off to the worst possible start when
Johnny Joseph, bowling into a strong wind with both control and aggression,
removed opener Skinner with the second ball of the innings. Worse was to follow
as Joseph struck again in his second and third overs to reduce the North to 2
for 3. Windley (39) did his best to
steady the ship, adding 30 with Davies before a superb throw from Saturley
resulted in an unnecessary run out. When Harris struck twice in successive
balls to reduce the North to 48 for 6 the match was effectively over as a
contest. To cap a fine all round performance, Carpenter mopped up the tail by
taking 3 for 17 with his deceptive spin and the North were finally all out for
99 in the 34th over.
