East Devon Under 15s v South Devon Under 15s
Sunday 1st May, Exeter Cricket Club
South Devon 196-9 (S Wyatt-Haines 52, O Higgs 36, P Taylor 24, S Powel 23; G Crouch 4-40) beat East Devon 195 all out (J Maxwell 79, A Chilcott 46; B Holmes 4-31, D McKenna 2-23, J Colgate 2-24) by 1 wicket
Opening game of the District Competition and, after weeks of wall to wall sunshine and bone hard pitches......it rained! Consequently it was a wicket that was difficult to get in on and there was always likely to be a ball to get you out. Yet again, the game turned into a nail-biter, especially when a run out decision in the penultimate over of the game could have gone either way.
South bowled commendably well with a wet ball and, other than a 4th wicket partnership (Maxwell / Chilcott), East were never allowed to settle. Maxwell and Chilcott both batted well, with plenty of singles and boundaries showing others how it could be done. Ben Holmes bowled quickly and accurately on a helpful track. Some good catches, including a great diving catch at mid wicket by Sam Wyatt Haines, ensured East were restricted to 195. The general consensus at the half way point suggested the total was 20 – 30 short of a good score. South batted positively (with almost 50 off the first 10 overs, taking singles well and punishing some less than accurate bowling. Ollie Higgs (36) and Sam Wyatt Haines (52) threatened to take the game away from East, but when Sam was out with the score on 137 the game hung in the balance. Gillam Crouch bowled a good second spell, taking 5 for 11 off 6 overs. The difference between the two sides was the South batsmen who managed to get some runs - Taylor 24, Powel 23 and Whitlock 19 n.o.- and it was fitting that Whitlock hit the winning run.
Well played South Devon.
