NEWTON St Cyres hadn’t won a game all season prior to Saturday – and the odds on ending that run against F Division leaders Tiverton looked slim.
So there was plenty to celebrate after St Cyres turned the tables on Tivvy, who were skittled out for 97 and lost by four wickets.
Saints’ skipper Dave Church set the tone by taking six for 24 to help send Tiverton on their way. Mike Pearce took four for 24 at the other end.
The run chase had a hitch of two, but Tom Sunderland’s 22 not out got Saints over the line.
St Cyres are still bottom, but Tiverton aren’t top any more as Chelston beat Culmstock to go past them.
Church said the win was long overdue and he had been wondering if it would ever come?
“I have been saying all season we are a better side than our results would indicate, but recently I have been asking myself if I might be deluded,” said Church.
“We couldn’t believe it at first – and I don’t think Tiverton could either!
“It is probably a bit late for a promotion push this season, but there is always next year.”
St Cyres play Lifton this Saturday.
