Remembering the fallen of the First World War

Clubs in the Devon Cricket League will hold an act of remembrance this weekend when a two-minute silence will be observed to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War which started one hundred years ago.

The train of events which lead directly to that terrible conflict began with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.

Events over the following month escalated. Germany declared war on Russia on August  1 and France on August 3. On the same day Germany invaded Belgium and England’s declaration of war on Germany was made on August 4

Many cricketers went off to war and were lost in the terrible conflict that ensued. This act of remembrance is an opportunity for cricket in Devon to remember the fallen.
