Having won the toss, Devon decided to bat on a rather cool and overcast day at Drefach Cricket Club in Carmarthenshire, Wales on the 28th June. Unfortunately Olivia Jones was bowled for a duck in the first over. Emma Jackman (c) and Jessie Jones steadied this early loss for Devon and posted a partnership of 56. Both girls played some excellently executed shots – straight driving and striking boundaries. The fall of Jessie’s (25) wicket in the 13th over, Devon were 56 for 2. Unfortunately Emma (21) was caught in the very next over by Wales’ captain, Nicole Reid.
Despite a rather steady succession of wickets, many of the Devon girls contributed with the bat, notably Milly Squire (14) and Charlie Green (19). Wales bowled rather wayward at times – 44 wides, did succeed in bowling Devon out in the 34 over for a total of 146; with notable performances from Wales’ Christina Shaw (6-0-24-3) and Nicole Reid (8-0-23-2).
Wales’ innings brought a glimmer of sun, though it was rather short lived following tea. Tight bowling from Milly Squire and Jessie Jones brought the first fall of wicket in the third over and the second was to fall not soon after with a good catch in the safe hands of Emma Jackman off Jessie’ bowling. At this stage wales were 14 with a loss of two wickets in the eighth over.
Jessie’s bowling continued to give very little away (8-2-8-4); and Lily Helston (5.1-3-15-4), despite her first disappointing ‘extra-laden’ over, bowled brilliantly to claim four wickets, that included the eventual last Wales’ wicket too.
The demise of Wales’ innings was a slow and wet affair, as the girls had to be brought off and on the field several times as the rain arrived.
Devon’s fielding was positive, saving singles and boundaries with swift pickups from Jessie Jones, Emma Jackman and Charlie Green and some impressive diving from Lydia Clements, and a well held catch from Milly Lee, certainly put Wales under pressure through their innings and gave little away. Wales were eventually bowled in the 28th over for 71.
A positive performance, Devon – well done!
