LIAM Lewis lashed his third Premier ton of the season so far as Sidmouth trounced Heathcoat by nine wickets.
Heathcoat made a respectable 235 for six in their 50 overs – at least it seemed respectable at the time.
Sidmouth knocked it off with more than four overs to spare and the only wicket they lost was at 136 when opener Josh Bess was caught and bowled by Jack Menheneott for 58.
Surviving opener Lewis batted on for an unbeaten 111, which came off 126 balls and included 16 fours and a six.
One more ton this season will make Lewis the first batter to hit four centuries in a summer since the league went to 18 games from 22 in 1999.
Two batsmen have had three – Lewis and Bradninch’s Jackson Thompson last summer!
Anthony Griffiths was the other not-out batsman on 60, which included nine boundaries.
Sidmouth skipper Will Murray rightly praised his batters, but said the bowlers made it easy by holding Heathcoat to 235.
“Sam Smith batted very well and although they took some momentum into tea 235 was never enough at Sidmouth,” said Murray. “Around 270 was probably par.
“Liam and Josh continued to build on their fine form and set a terrific platform for the first wicket.
“In a perfect world we would have liked the two bonus points, but it was a great chase and the top three again looked very solid.
“It was a wonderful 100 by Liam and two professional 50s from Josh and Griff.”
Heathcoat included Somerset’s Lewis Gregory in their line-up, but he couldn’t do much to slow the rate down. His five overs cost 36 runs.
Of the rest only Menheneott wasn’t hit for more than four an over.
Skipper Sam Smith top scored for Heathcoat with 84, coming in at 88 for four after Gregory had just gone lbw to Will Murray for three.
Jason Williams made 44 at the top of the order, then Qassim Adams added 42 at his end batting with Williams, Gregory and Smith.
After Adams went leg-before to Charlie Miles, Smith and Dylan Penberthy (30) made 56 for the sixth wicket.
Smith did most of the scoring in the last five overs as he and Jason Parr put on 52.
Skipper Smith said: “We knew travelling down there would be tough and it played out that way.
“At half way we were happy with a decent score posted.
“Unfortunately they outclassed us with the willow and Liam and Josh Bess killed the game as they have done to a lot of sides this year.”
Sidmouth remain out in front of the rest in the Premier Division with a 26-point lead over Exmouth.
Heathcoat are eight points clear of Sandford, who occupy the second relegation place. The two sides meet this Saturday in what is going to be a crunch game.
“We are really looking forward to playing Sandford with a full-strength squad,” said Smith.
“We have lots of selection choices and finally we will be going in on the back of a team batting performance.”
