As the Devon Women's side were playing against Staffs in a championship match, the newest and youngest group of budding young female cricketers were competing in the Lady Taverners Under 11 competition at Topsham St.James CC.
Last Sunday 8 clubs from Devon attended the The U11 Lady Taverners. This is a national competition, with the winner from Sundays tournament going on to the Regional Finals, also being hosted in Devon.
With 8 teams and over 80 girls ready the tournament got underway. The teams were split into 2 groups and all played each other within their group resulting in 3 games each. After some high scoring and close games, including a massive 279 (teams start with 200) from Chagford, the final group placings were decided. Ipplepen and Thorverton came 4th in their groups and played off for 7th place, Sidmouth and Chagford came 3rd in their groups and played off for 5th place, Topsham and Whitchurch played for 3rd place and Paignton and Tarka, who won their groups went into the final.
The final round games got underway with 4 great matches to end the day. The third place playoff was the game of the day ending in a tie with both Topsham and Whitchurch scoring 228 runs. The final saw Paignton bat first and score 227. Tarka however proved too strong and after some fine batting ended up scoring 248 and booked their place in the regional final.
The day proved a massive success, not only with some excellent performances, but also because for many girls this was the first time they had played. The games were played in the right spirit, everyone enjoyed themselves and the development of girls cricket within Devon has taken another positive step forward.
