At a wet and murky Wigan, Lancashire won the toss and opted to bowl first in conditions that offered assistance to the bowlers. Devon’s openers Carr and Cranstone coped well with the conditions with Carr the dominant partner in an opening stand of 52 before Cranstone (14) was caught at slip playing at a wide ball from Arran Brindle. The rain that threatened eventually came and with it a two hour rain delay which didn’t help the visitors. After taking an early lunch interval and with plenty of time in the day Devon resumed their innings, Carr was joined by Bertrand and they added a further 20 before Carr (42) mistimed a pull and was caught at mid wicket. Jodie Dibble came and went for an unconvincing 5 and the red rose were in the ascendency, Bertrand and Miles then got their head downs and added 86 for the 4th wicket and looked like taking Devon to a score in excess of 200. Bertrand (38) was then out to an outstanding catch to end the partnership just as she was growing in stature. There followed a tame end to the innings as from 164-3 Devon closed on 182-9, 30 or 40 short of where they should have been, despite an excellent 56 from Lottie Miles. Calmer heads and better use of the batting powerplay will help in the future.
In response Devon hit their straps immediately with Ansley taking two wickets in an opening spell of 10 overs that yielded just 16 overs in partnership with Donohue. A blitz from Brindle and Brown, 72 from the next tem turned the game Lancashire’s way, however when Brindle holed out to extra cover, caught by Miles off the bowling of Bertrand Devon were back in the hunt. Had Becky Piddock hung on to a chance at mid off to dismiss Brown then Devon may well have gone to claim victory, as it was she marshalled the middle and lower order superbly to make 101 from 100 balls before being dismissed with only twelve to get, Devon fought to the end, Donohue came back to claim two well deserved wickets as Lancashire claimed victory off the last ball of the 48th over.
A lot of positives to be taken from the game, in truth a game that could have been won but just some key moments in the game that went Lancashire’s way.
