World Cup winning captain Charlotte Edwards and three of her victorious England team gave budding female cricketers in Exeter a masterclass at a recent two day cricket camp.
The international stars, including recent NatWest player of the series Lydia Greenway, were on hand to offer expertise on batting, bowling and fielding to over 70 girls between the ages of eight and 16. The bumper number of girls were given inspiration and special prizes for improvement, performance, and also for playing the game in the right spirit.
Charlotte Edwards said:
“The Exeter MCC Spirit of Cricket camp has been a huge success. There have been some girls who have played a little cricket and some who have had their first taste today. There’s been some great talent here today, I’ve really enjoyed it and hope that these girls will continue to play.”
This MCC Spirit of Cricket Summer Camp is part of a collaboration between Marylebone Cricket Club - the owner of Lord's Cricket Ground - and Chance to Shine, the Cricket Foundation's campaign to regenerate and encourage competitive cricket in state schools all over the country.
The MCC/Chance to Shine partnership communicates the Spirit of Cricket message of "play hard, play fair, have fun" in schools throughout Exeter. This is achieved through lessons on the Spirit of Cricket in the classroom - with supporting film material - and intra-school competitions in the playground.
560 hours of coaching had already been delivered in Exeter schools during the summer term with an emphasis on creating new girls sections at local clubs. Exeter and Topsham St James Cricket Clubs have both successfully launched girls sections and many of the attendees at the summer camp came from these sections.
