Match report:
After some heavy morning showers, the surface at Braunton CC was a wet and made it a good toss to win. This went the way of the North who didn’t hesitate in inviting their guests from the East to bat. This looked to be a good decision when opener Dan Powell was removed 3rd ball with the scorers untroubled. This bought East skipper Marcus Hoddinott in to join Jack Maunder. The pair set about seeing off some early pace bowling from Brazier and Fogarty.
Thankfully for the East, the stiff breeze soon dried the top surface and batting became a little easier. Maunder and Hoddinott took the score on to 56 before a watchful innings by Hoddinott (7) was abruptly ended by a great delivery from Joe Barnes. This saw debutant Dan MacLaurin stride purposefully to the crease and he settled in well, playing sensibly and correctly in support of Maunder who was now well into his stride. The pair had added 20 when Alli Kelly came on to bowl. She had an immediate impact, bowling Maunder (47), Gater (0) and Bess (0) in her first two overs. This reduced the East to 81 for 5, and innings of some presence and fortitude was required.
Step up Dan MacLaurin. He steadied the ship, ably supported by some positive stroke play from another debutant, Reid Mawdsley. The pair added 69 before Mawdsley ran himself out for 31. Meanwhile, MacLaurin had the bit between his teeth and soon made his 50 before being caught for 69. A superb innings given the position the East were in early in his innings.
With some late hitting from Ollie Dawe (25no) including a huge six over long on, the East posted a formidable 235 for 8. A score that looked very unlikely at one point.
In reply the North were soon up against it. Some accurate bowling from Ollie Dawe soon resulted in the pressure telling, Henry Gater executing a superb throw to run out opener Ross Clayton for 0. The scoreboard ticked over slowly before spinner Dom Bess got going. He bowled with skill and variety to take 4 for 12 in 7 overs. He was supported by Kieran Vinnicombe with 2 for 10 from 4 overs.
A solid fielding performance, accompanied by some good bowling saw the East reduce the North to 77 all out, with only Barney Meadowcroft (19) and Eddie Mann (11) making double figures.
