Match report:
Following on from last season’s nail-biter, these 2 teams produced an even more nerve wrenching finish this year with neither team taking full honours in a thrilling low scoring tie at West Buckland School.
Put in to bat on a damp pitch the North openers Townshend and Lathwell batted responsibly to build a solid foundation with a partnership of 55 before an inspired Cooper tore through the top order on his way to a 4 wicket haul that sent the North from 55-0 to 59-4. A fifth wicket partnership blossomed between Mitchell and Drew worth a priceless 48 runs before the wickets fell in a hurry again towards the end of the innings in a search for a 3rd batting point. The North saw out their full quota of 40 overs to finish on 128-9.
The West began their reply in positive fashion, Dunlop making a quick-fire 15 from a handful of deliveries and along with a few early extras the West rattled the score along at 6 an over early on. Two quick wickets left them in a precarious spot at 56 – 4, but then a solid and very sensible partnership of 34 between Richardson and Goody looked to be taking the West home with plenty of time to spare. However Gidney had other ideas and bowling his well flighted off spin claimed a sensational 5-23 to send the West from 90 – 4 to 111 – 9 and for the first time the North looked like the favourites to win the game.
However, in one of the most courageous innings I have seen, Edmonds almost took the West to victory batting at number 9. Twice he had to pick himself up and dust himself down after being floored by blows to the helmet from a fiery late spell from Drew and twice he came back from it to stand tall for his team in making 14 not out and bringing the scores level. In a finish befitting a nerve jangling tie, the final wicket fell courtesy of a run out and both teams left the field with mixed emotions. Happy not to have lost and a little disappointed not to have won.
