1999 - Paignton pass 200 for first time in final

ANDY  Stocks and Mark Ashworth each hit half-centuries as Torquay were blown away by Paignton in last night's Midas Shield final at Queens Park.

Paignton became the first team to pass 200 in the final of the 15 eight-ball overs competition as they racked up a hefty 204 for seven.

Then Torquay were dismissed for 105 with an over to go as they crashed to a 99-run defeat.

Simon Edwards (15) and Liam Talbot (15) had 22 on the board in an over and a half with Edwards and Stocks pushing the score along to 47 by the fourth over.

Then came the fireworks as Ashworth and 17-year-old Stocks, later named as man of the match, flailed the bowling to all parts of the ground and out of it! Stocks is pictured receving his man of the match award from competition secretary Conrad Sutcliffe.

Stocks went on to make exactly 50 off just 35 balls in a stand of 74 which occupied a mere six overs.

Ashworth carried on to 55, hitting three sixes along the way, before holing out to deep backward square with four overs to go.

Even then the carnage continued with Steve Talbot clouting another 24 off just 10 balls as Torquay's bowlers wilted.

Any slender hopes Torquay might have had soon disappeared as a combination of tight bowling from Neil Collings and Steve Talbot, plus some injudicious running between the wickets, left them 43 for four after five overs.

Steve Craig staved off total collapse with a knock of 42, but by then the damage was long done.

Paignton 204-7 (M Ashworth 55, A Stocks 50, S Talbot 24; C Mallon 2-27), Torquay 105 (S Craig 42).
