MIKE Smith was the right pick as man-of-the-match after playing a key role in Abbotskerswell’s 57-run win over Bovey Tracey 2nd XI in the final of the Aaron Printers Narracott Cup.
Abbots racked up a handy 164 for five in their allocation of 15 eight-ball overs at Barton – Smith making a top score of 46.
When Bovey tried to chase they could not get out of the staring blocks as Smith tied them down for four overs to take three for 16. Bovey were 65 for five after 10 overs and the game over as a contest long before then.
The only weighing up man-of-the-match adjudicator Bob Dickinson (pictured makng the award) had to do was between Smith and Steve Short, whose quick 42 off 35 balls was a textbook example of how it should be done in this type of cricket.
The former Torquay and South Devon all-rounder waited for the bad ball to come along for his five fours, but worked the ball into the gaps for the rest to keep the board ticking over.
Short also took two for 31 in four overs of his off-spin, but could have no real complaints about missing out on the Ted Dickinson Cup, presented yearly by his nephew in memory of the former Torquay stalwart.
Smith’s 35-ball stay included five fours and three sixes – all of which were clubbed in one over from Colin Shute, who didn’t get a second after going for 20.
With Marcus Green making 12 in a hurry, and Chris Kelmere Jnr chipping in with 16 not out at the end, Abbots always appeared to have too many on the board. So it proved.
Wickets fell early to Smith and Short, although young Ollie Thomas showed some resilience with good use of the paddle shot through the leg side.
Smith got him eventually, having already accounted for James Shepperd and Ben Elphick.
Richard Longstreet made 29 and skipper James Mason clipped a few, but it was all in a losing cause by then.
