Paignton enhance title credentials

PAIGNTON showed why they are on most captains’ promotion shortlists with aa gutsy one-wicket win over Budleigh Salterton.

Budleigh’s total of 235 for six looked almost out of Paignton’s reach when they were 150 for seven in reply, the leaders are top for a reason.

An eighth-wicket stand of 68 between George Yates and George Benton put the game back in the balance, then Yates with  Stephen George and last man Conor Ashworth scrambled over the line.

Victory keeps Paignton top of the table going into this Saturday’s Queens Park clash with Plympton.

Budleigh have dropped from joint top to fifth in a fortnight, but in the log-jam at the top of the A Division are only 11 points behind second-placed Barton.

Connor Bryan, the Paignton captain, said the win sent out a message of intent to any sides unaware where his side want to go.

“It was a fantastic win for us,” said Bryan.

“It creates a little more light between us and the rest of the teams in the table.

“The game was hard fought all the way throughout, as you would expect from teams sitting first and second in the table.

“We showed real maturity in our run chase and also showed how deep we are able to bat.”

Elliot Rice’s run of form continued with a top score of 71 not out in Budleigh’s innings.

There were stands of 36 with Ben Phillips (29), 44 with Luke Peterson (22) and 69 for the fifth wicket with Jack Dart (45).

Ashworth was the only Paigonton bowler to keep below four an over – and he was wicketless.

Paignton shot off to 108 for none thanks to openers Ollie Higgs (36) and Zubyar  Hamza (53) but just when it looked like a cakewalk wickets started to tumble.

Five went for four runs as 108 for none became 112 for five with James Burke (2-53) and Joel Murphy (3-25) doing the damage.

Jack Dart (3-25) kept the pressure on with spin, but the slide stopped with Benton (34) and Yates (46), who made the improbable possible.
