South Devon Under 11s v North Devon Under 11s
Sunday 22nd May, Ipplepen Cricket Club
North Devon 206-8 (L Williams 41, T Moody 30, A Kingman 21; A Carter 3-6, Z Hannis-Smith 2-24) drew with South Devon 170-9 (G Holland 29, D Bullock 22; T Moody 5-30)
Blustery winds and the famous Ipplepen slope caused problems for several of the South bowlers, as some aggressive North batting saw them them rattle past 200 in the allotted overs. Williams led the way for the visitors with 41 that included 7 boundaries, after openers Kingman and Moody got North off to a flying start with a stand of 67 for the 1st wicket in little over 10 overs.
At one point the North could have been on target for a score approaching 300, but South found some control through the bowling of price (1 for 24 from 8 overs) and Hannis-Smith (2 for 24 from 7 overs) that eventually brought the scoring rate down somewhat. A small collapse towards the end of the North innnings was triggered by Carter's medium pace that drew 3 wickets in 3 overs, but an unbroken stand of 33 for the 9th wicket got the visitors beyond 200. Extra's contributed 90 to a final total of 206!
South had a decent attempt at chasing the runs down, with Carter (16) and Holland (29) adding 58 for the 1st wicket and although a number of South batsmen got going on the run chase, no-one was able to play the substantial innings that could have brought a remarkable victory. Dan Bullock looked like he could spearhead the chase, but having hit a quick-fire 22 he was stumped and impetus of the innings was lost. The offspin of Moody was the North's catalyst, as he reeled off 7 consecutive overs in the middle of the innings that yielded 4 wickets for 29 runs, and the stand-in skipper returned to bowl the final over and claim his “5-for” with the first ball of the last over.
South batted all the way to number 11, with good partnerships of 25 for the 6th wicket between Price and Bullock, and for the 8th wicket between Hingston and Tait, while the final pair of Pitman and While held out for the losing draw as the overs expired. The South may reflect that if they could have limited their bowling extra's to 50, they would have won the game!
