SHALDON skipper Craig Greenwood was left tearing his hair in frustration by a one-wicket defeat against Plymouth Civil Service after he declared five overs early.
Greenwood thought he had enough on the board after Karl Blackburn stroked an unbeaten century and Seamus McKenna made 68 not out in a Shaldon total of 293 for three declared.
Blackburn and McKenna put on 149 unbroken after James Fulner (37) and Todd Bullman (55) had give Shaldon an 84-run start.
A further stand of 64 between McKenna and Bullman had Shaldon on the launchpad for a big score.
Greenwood came off early hoping to win the game and claim two extra bonus points.
It was a gamble that backfired. There were runs through the order for Civil, culminating in a match-winning 62 from Dan Windsor.
Mark Couch (2-34) and McKenna (3-49) had respectable bowling figures. Carl Woolnough (1-83 off 8) didn’t fare so well.
What irritated Greenwood was the number of extras his side gifted Civil
“We gave them 40 of which 34 were wides – and that cost us the game,” fumed Greenwood.
“Our bowlers really have to bowl straighter as we can’t give that many runs away and expect to win.”
