Sidmouth waiting on Randerson and Fawcett

SIDMOUTH are waiting on news from keeper Peter Randerson and Aussie batsman Jake Fawcett before finalising a side to face Premier leaders Torquay on the Fortfield.

Randerson sustained a broken thumb in the defeat at Paignton last time out and isn’t sure if he can play. Matt Hewer is poised to keep wicket if needed.

Aussie Fawcett has finally arrived in the UK, but is currently in Leeds watching the England-New Zealand Test.

“He has assured me he will be here on Friday and will play on Saturday, said skipper Will Murray, who missed the loss at Paignton but returns against Torquay at the expense of Will Gater.

Fawcett, a former Western Australia player, has a prolific record in Grade cricket, having a career average in the high 30s and nearly 4,000 runs to his name.

Torquay have won four on the bounce on the way to Sidmouth and Murray expects them to be a handful.

“They will be full of confidence after the start they have had, whereas we are on the back of a disappointing defeat,” said Murray.

“Torquay have clearly recruited well during the winter and we are excited about playing a new side which clearly has some talented young players, which is good to see.”

Torquay skipper Justin Yau said the momentum generated by beating North Devon was going to crucial if his side is going to win at Sidmouth.

The fact Sidmouth lost to Paignton last time out is largely irrelevant to Yau.

“Sidmouth cannot be underestimated,” said Yau.

“They have lost key players from last year, but are still a big threat.

“It's interesting to see how they will go this year and their result last week was a big surprise to us.

“No doubt they will want to bounce back pretty quickly and we will have to be wary of them.”

Somerset’s Max Waller is unavailable as he has two T20s coming up. Tim Western comes in to bolster the batting.

Waller has been influential in taking Torquay to the top, but Yau is confident Torquay will function without him.

“We have match winners everywhere,” said Yau.

“Mitchell Pugh's innings, Sach Galhenage's and Ryan Stevenson's spells proved that last week against North Devon.

“It was quite refreshing to have played so well against a strong side with excellent individual performances across the board.”
