Plymstock hold on in tense final over

PLYMSTOCK skipper Scott Mansfield picked out Jack Horton and Dave Orchard for special praise after a nailbiting four-run won at Shorooke Park.

Horton top scored with 75 as Plymstock made 179 all out.

Orchard then picked up the wickets of Shobrooke openers Chris Ford and Jon James after they had put on 82 for the first wicket and were threatening to dominate the game.

Orchard also dispatched Adrian Codling – a ‘big player for Shobroke’ according to Mansfield on his way to figures of three for 29.

‘Jack Horton was dropped early on, which cost Thorverton as it was his knock that held us together,” said Mansfield.

“At one stage we were 91 for six, but Jack and Ian Whalley with a valuable 35 at number eight put us in a position where we could think about winning the game.

“Jack bowled well – two for 38 off nine overs – but Orchard’s spell was crucial.”

An seventh-wicket stand of 71 between Horton and Ian Whalley (35) came back to haunt Shobrooke later in the game.

Dave Orchard then picked up the wickets of Shobrooke openers Chris Ford and Jon James after they had put on 82 for the first wicket and were threatening to dominate the game.

Orchard also dispatched the influential Adrian Codling  on his way to figures of three for 29.

From 100 for one Shobrooke dipped to 113 four, but skipper Simpson (52), Richard Pyle (35) and Phil Anning (23) kept the  in the game.

Eleven to win off the last over was gettable, but losing Anning first ball made it a bit  tougher and Shobrooke came up five runs short of victory.

Simpson said Shobrooke need to lit their game this Saturday when they go to Abbotskerswell.

“We dropped a few catches and should have bowled them out for less, both things that ended up costing us,” said Simpson.
