Tavvy show title credentials

TAVISTOCK underlined their claim to be serious title challengers in the B Division by beating Thorverton by three wickets.

Thorverton made 221 all out with an over to go – George Greed making a top score of 84 on his debut second time around since rejoining from Sandford.

Greed and Paul Fielder (43) put on 127 for the first wicket with Dave Baldock chipping in with 42.

Greed was second out at 181 – run-out by a direct hit by Aaron Churchill.

Jamie Stephens (4-56) and Tim Pope (3-45) then bundled the rest out for 40 comined.

Thorverton were second in the table behind Tavvy and were there for a reason – as they showed by making life as hard as possible.

Ian Gray (36) made some early runs, but at 117 for five when Stephens went in the game was in the balance.

Stephens with 44 not out anchored one end while Shaun Cleeve (25) and Dave Milligan (26) made inroads.

South African Thoko Peter (38no) and Stephens put in 71 unbroken to win the game with an over to go.

Tavvy have a healthy 28-point lead over Bideford, who took over second spot by beating Braunton.

Dave Manning, who was captain for the day in the absence of Shaun Daymond, said the depth in the team was the reason they won the game.

“Three or four years ago we would have folded at 117 for five, but we are made of sterner stuff now,” said Manning.

“It is no fluke either as that’s the third game we have won in similar circumstances.

“Having an eight, nine and ten who can hold the bat really make a difference.

“Dave Milligan 26 was really important in the context of the game. He whacked three sixes and that got the asking rate down rapidly.”
