After restricting the hosts to 180 for 9, Daniel Pyle (2-20) and Daniel Wolf (2-25) keeping the middle order quiet and with three run outs, including a direct hit from Ben Green, Devon felt they had restricted Gwent to a target which was well within their reach. Strong contributions from Jamie Telford behind the stumps and economical spells from Harry Dunlop, Will Thompson and Alfie Huxtable all contributed to what was a good performance in the burning heat.
Chasing 180 after a long stint in the field would never be easy. A first wicket partnership of 83 helped lay a strong foundation. Sam Lathwell (39) and Toby Codd (41) batted with maturity before Lathwell was run out following a fumble by the bowler. Codd, also run out, went two overs later to a good piece of fielding in the circle. With the middle order offering little resistance, other than a quick fire 16 from captain Will Thompson, it was left to Jake Reddick (55 not out) to play a well paced innings, batting through from number 3, and see Devon home with three balls to spare.
At 136 for 7 Devon looked like they would come up short, but thanks to some good running and strong hitting, they maneuvered themselves into a winning position. Dan Wolf played a vital part in the victory, coming in at eleven and holding up his end to allow Reddick to caress a cover drive for four to seal the victory.
There won’t be a game that passes by where the under 12 team don’t learn something, but today they have learnt how important it is to take your chances in the field and save every run possible. With the bat, the lessons learnt included – good, clear, early calling when running, batting in partnerships and everyone contributing with the bat from one to eleven!
A well deserved victory and a great start to the season. Many thanks to all parents who made the trip up to Newport and witnessed a very exciting game!
